Reading, rephrased.

Phrasing ends every line where you’d naturally pause. Guided Reading moves through the page one phrase at a time, at your speed. So you stop hunting for your place, and just read.

Phrasing. Lines that end where you’d pause.

Fireside ends lines at natural pauses, keeping related words together so sentences are easier to follow. The words and text size stay the same; only the line breaks change.

They were indeed a queer-looking party that assembled on the bank—the birds with draggled feathers, the animals with their fur clinging close to them, and all dripping wet, cross, and uncomfortable.

Guided Reading. One phrase at a time, at your pace.

Choose your speed, and Fireside brings each phrase forward for just the right amount of time, holding a little longer on the words that take longer to read. Pause with a tap. Pick up right where you left off.

On‑device intelligence. Trained on how people really read.

Fireside’s phrasing and pacing are machine learning, built on the way real people read and a deep understanding of language. All of it runs right on your iPhone, so every page is ready the moment you turn to it.

Research behind Phrasing

Studies of phrase-based layouts have found better comprehension for some readers, including people learning English. Results vary, and those studies tested reading layouts rather than Fireside itself. 2020 study ↗ 2005 study (PDF) ↗

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my own books?

Import EPUB, DRM-free Kindle files (MOBI and AZW3), FictionBook, comic archives, Markdown, HTML and plain text. Share a file from another app or add it from Files. Books protected by a store’s copy protection can’t be opened.

Are there books to discover?

Yes. Browse and download free public-domain classics from Standard Ebooks in the Discover tab. You can also add other compatible book catalogs by their address.

Can I read without an internet connection?

Once a book is on your device, you can read, use guided reading, highlight and take notes without a signal. You’ll need a connection to browse Discover and download new books.

What about PDFs?

Fireside doesn’t support PDF. It’s made for books whose text can adapt to your font, spacing and reading preferences. EPUB is a great place to start.

Will my place sync between devices?

Your place is saved automatically on the device you’re reading on. Reading positions and libraries don’t currently sync between devices.
